Bianca Andreescu Rolls Past Collins In Madrid

The Canadian dominated her American opponent in straight sets to register her first top 10 win since the 2019 US Open.

Bianca Andreescu is into the third round of the 2022 Mutua Madrid Open after beating the American Danielle Collins in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 in 69 minutes.

The Canadian finished with once ace and won 63% of her first serve points while also saving five of the six breakpoints she faced in the match.

“I know that she has been having a great season so I needed to bring my A game and I didn’t think it would go like that at all but I had a game plan, I stuck to it and I am happy I won”. The former US Open champion said afterwards.

It was actually Collins who had the first opportunity to break after holding the opening service game but it was quickly saved by the Toronto native.

After holding serve Andreescu went on the attack and managed to set up three breakpoints with a stunning forehand return winner. Earning her first break of serve to take an early 2-1 lead.

Andreescu looked hungry for more and broke Collins a second time. She then broke her again at 5-1 to seal the first set in a mere 29 minutes to set the tone for the match.

The world number 111 continued to roll at the beginning of the second set and after holding the opening serve game broke serve again to take a 2-0 lead and was able to consolidate to make it 3-0.

The world number eight was able to get one of those breaks back to make it 4-1 but was immediately broken the following game and the Canadian served out the match.

In a post match TV interview with Tennis Channel Andreescu was asked about her physical shape and how she was able to prepare for her return to the tour after a long abscense.

“I have been doing a lot, my physical trainer has put me through quite the intense workout the last 2-3 months and it’s really been paying off”. She said.

Danielle Collins is the first player inside the top 10 Andreescu has beaten since her run to the title at the 2019 US Open. She will face another American in the next round in Jessica Pegula.
