Holger Rune broke reigning Olympic champion Alexander Zverev four times en route to an upset 6-3 6-2 win at the BMW Open in Munich. Rune scored the first top 10 win of his career.
Rune earned a break at love in the second game to open up a 4-2 lead. The Danish player saved two break points before converting his sixth set point in the ninth game to close out the first set 6-3.
Rune broke twice in the first and fifth games before serving out the win in 1 hour and 40 minutes.
“It was a difficult match from the beginning. He is in the top three in the world and has been playing some unbelievable tennis, especially in the past year winning so many big titles. I have a lot of respect for him, and I obviously didn’t expect to win in two sets, and with a score like this. It was a hard match, we played a lot of rallies and I am really happy about my performance today”, said Rune.
Zverev reached the quarter finals in Munich in his past five appearances and won two consecutive titles in 2017 and 2018. Rune set up a quarter final match against Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori, who broke four times in his 6-3 6-3 win over Maxime Cressy in 76 minutes. Ruusuvuori reached his first ATP Tour quarter final since his final in Pune last February.
