Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska cruised past Spanish qualifier Cristina Bucsa 6-2 6-3 to reach the quarter final at the Open 6e Sens Métropole de Lyon.
Last week Yastremska fled war-torn Ukraine with her 15-year-old Ivanna. She was granted a wildcard into the Lyon singles tournamet. The Yastremska sisters received a doubles wild-card.
Yastremska earned her first match point with an ace and converted it with a forehand.
Yastremska saved two match points in her opening round match against Ana Bogdan before sealing the win in a third-set tie-break.
“Today definitely was a little bit easier with my emotions. I could keep them under control, so I am very happy with that. Yesterday I tried to recover myself as fast as possible to prepare for my match today, and I am still very nervous because I really want to win the matches for my country. This tournament is very emotional for me, but I am very happy with the win today”, said Yastremska.
Caroline Garcia overcame Martina Trevisan 6-4 2-6 6-3 to set up a quarter final match against Alison Van Uytvanck.
Trevisan saved a break point in the seventh game of the third set but Garcia converted her second chance before holding serve to take a 5-3 lead. Trevisan fended off the first match point with her first serve. Garcia earned the break on her second match point,
Van Uytvanck beat Garcia in the Lyon quarter finals in 2020. Vitalia Diatchenko upset Viktorija Golubic 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-4 to reach her first tour-level quarter final since 2014.
