Jelena Ostapenko beat last year’s Roland Garros champion Barbora Krejcikova 6-3 6-2 in 1 hour and 13 minutes at the Qatar Total Energies Open in Doha.
Ostapenko, who won the Dubai title last week, scored her fifth win over a Grand Slam in the past two weeks. The Latvian player has equalled her career-best winning streak of eight consecutive matches.
Ostapenko went up a break in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead. Krejcikova broke straight back to love in the fifth game. Ostapenko earned a second break in the sixth game and saved two break points to hold serve for 5-2. The Latvian player served out the first set 6-3.
Ostapenko converted her first break in the opening game of the second set. Krejcikova broke straight back in the second game and held serve in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Ostapenko won the next five games with two breaks to win the second set 6-2.
Ostapenko took a re-match against Krejcikova, who had beaten her Latvian opponent 2-6 6-4 6-4 in their most recent head-to-head clash at the Australian Open
Coco Gauff upset last year’s Indian Wells champion Paula Badosa 6-3 6-2 in 1 hour and 17 minutes to advance to her fifth quarter at WTA level or above following Dubai, Rome, Roland Garros and Montreal.
Gauff scored her first win over a top 10 player since Rome 2021, when she beat Aryna Sabalenka and Ashleigh Barty to reach the quarter final.
Gauff went up a double break to race out to a 3-0 lead. Badosa pulled one break in the fourth game for 1-3. Gauff won three consecutive games with a break in the seventh game to win the first set 6-3. Gauff broke twice in the fifth and ninth games to win the second set 6-2.
