Corentin Moutet has exit the Adelaide International in controversy after being handed a default during his match against Laslo Djere.
The French world No.92 was taking on seventh seed Djere with both players level at one set a piece before the disqualification occurred. BFMTV has reported that Moutet was heard saying “F**k you”towards the umpire several times in annoying over a series of calls he made. It is understood that prior to the outburst, he had been annoyed by the behaviour of his opponent.
After winning the first set 6-4, Moutet then had a 4-2 lead in the second frame before losing it. His frustration reached boiling point during the final game of the second set where he held a 40-0 lead before losing five points in a row. It was at this stage when he started to swear towards the direction of the umpire’s chair.
Unaware of what was about to happen, both players left the court for a toilet break. When Moutet returned the umpire called over the tournament supervisor before disqualifying him for ‘unsportsmanlike conduct.’ As a result, he will now lose his second round prize money.
“Different rules, different person. They’ll treat me good when they’ll need me,” Moutet wrote in his Instagram story without elaborating any further.
According to journalist Enrico Maria Riva, the 22-year-old is the first Frenchman to be disqualified from an ATP Tour event since Mathieu Montcourt at the 2008 Sydney International.
Elsewhere in Adelaide, former US Open champion Marin Cilic sealed his place in the last eight with a 6-4, 7-6(3) win over Thiago Monteiro. The third seed produced a total of 16 aces and won 85% of his first service points to seal the 550th Tour win of his career. Cilic’s next match will be against Djere.
Also through to the quarter-finals is South Korea’s Kwon Soon-woo who breezed past Mikhail Ymer 6-3, 6-2.
