The world number one and Aussie managed to beat the American in straight sets to make history.

Ash Barty is the first Australian player in 44 years to win the Australian Open after beating Danielle Collins in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 in one hour and 27 minutes firing 17 winners and 10 aces.

The last Australian before her to win the tournament down under was Christine O’Neil back in 1977.

The first set stayed on serve until 3-2 when the world number one managed to earn her first breakpoint of the match and took it and that one break of serve was enough for her to serve out the first set.

The American fought back in the second set holding her opening service game and broke in the second game on her second break opportunity of the game to take an early 2-0 lead.

After consolidating the break at 3-1 she managed to turn the break into a double break and at 5-1 served for the first set but the Aussie continued to fight back and got one of the breaks back.

Collins had another chance to serve for it at 5-3 but Barty broke her again using her powerful groundstrokes to subdue the American and the set ended up going back on serve.

The second set and the match was decided by a tiebreak as the world number 30 seemed rattled as Barty jumped out to a 4-0 lead playing some amazing tennis and served it out to take it 7-2 sealing the win and the title.

With the win, Barty now has three grand slam trophies and is one US Open title away from completing the career grand slam while this is the best result for Collins at a grand slam.

The Aussie earned $2,071,064 in prize money for winning the tournament and will pad her lead in ranking points atop the women’s world rankings.
