Rafael Nadal has been voted by fellow players as the winner of the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award for the fourth consecutive year and for the fifth time in his career. He won this Award for the first time in 2010.
This award recognizes the Spaniard’s fair play, professionalism and fair play. Nadal has won an ATP Award in each of the player-categories: Newcomer (2003), Most Improved (2005), Comeback (2013) and Sportsmanship (2010, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021). He was named Athur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year in 2011 and was crowned ATP number 1 five times in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2017 and 2019.
Nadal won two clay titles in Rome and Barcelona during the 2021 season and reached the semifinal at Roland Garros, but he has not played since the Citi Open in Washington where lost to Lloyd Harris in the Round of 16. The Spaniard ended his 17th consecutive season in the top 10 at world number 6 in the ATP Ranking.
He won an ATP Tour title in record 18 straight seasons from 2004 to 2021 and tied with Djokovic and Federer for most Grand Slam titles with 20 trophies including 13 Roland Garros wins and owns the second most ATP Masters 1000 titles. “I can’t be happier to receive one more time the Sportsmanship Award from my colleagues on the Tour. It means a lot to me, so thanks a lot to every player that thinks that I am the right one to receive this award”, said said Nadal.
