Stefanos Tsitsipas will be taking no further part in the Nitto ATP Finals after withdrawing from the event due to an elbow injury.
The decision comes after a convincing opening round-robin match defeat to Andrey Rublev 6-4 6-4.
It was obvious from that match that Tsitsipas wasn’t 100% after retiring from the Paris Masters a couple of weeks before.
Now Tsitsipas has made the decision to withdraw and end the season, “I have taken the very difficult decision to retire from the 2021 [Nitto ATP] Finals due to my elbow injury, which has been bothering me for a couple of weeks now,” the world number four told atptour.com in a website.
“It’s a very difficult decision from my side and I was working really hard this year to get to play the Finals and be part of this amazing event, but unfortunately I won’t be able to continue.”
Taking Tsitsipas’ place in the group will be Cameron Norrie who faces Casper Ruud in the evening match on Wednesday before taking on Novak Djokovic on Friday.
As for Tsitsipas it’s a disappointing end to what has been another great season, reaching his first grand slam final at Roland Garros as well as winning a Masters 1000 title at Monte-Carlo.
Now the Greek will look to prepare to break even more ground in 2022 in his search for a first grand slam title.
