Garbine Muguruza is excited to keep her hopes alive of qualifying for the semi-finals of the WTA Finals after a three set win over Barbora Krejcikova.
After a last set tiebreak loss to Karolina Pliskova in her opening match, Garbine Muguruza got her WTA Finals campaign back on track with a 2-6 6-3 6-4 victory over Roland Garros champion Barbora Krejcikova.
Despite hitting the same amount of unforced errors and less winners than her opponent, Muguruza managed to break in the crucial moments as she kept her hopes alive of reaching the semi-finals.
After the match in Guadalajara Muguruza admitted the crowd helped her a lot in this match, “I think I started the first set not playing great,” the Spaniard admitted to wtatennis.com.
“In the second set the crowd really helped me. I said before and I really mean it, because they cheer me up. I realized that, hey, I’m not leaving this court without changing things around at least or give Barbora the biggest fight.
“I tell myself I’m in Mexico. I love it here. This is the final push. I’m going to give everything I have left on every single match. No matter if it’s ugly the score or whatever. I always have a chance because I’ve played all of them, I’ve beaten some, lost to some.
“It’s really very open. You never feel like you don’t have a chance right now. So that’s where I get my fuel. I’m very excited to keep my options alive.”
Muguruza will now play Anett Kontaveit in her last group match on Sunday with the Spaniard knowing that a win will see her into the last four.
Meanwhile Kontaveit has already made the semi-finals after she eased past Karolina Pliskova 6-4 6-0 in her second match.
Attention on Saturday turns to the other group as the two winners Paula Badosa and Maria Sakkari will face each other while the other match will see Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek square off.
