Matteo Berrettini and Jannik Sinner won their opening matches at the BNP Paribas Open boosting their chances to qualify for the BNP Paribas Open.
Berrettini reached the third round with a 6-4 7-5 win over Chilean qualifier Alejandro Tabilo. Berrettini broke serve once in the third game of the first set and in the 11th game of the second set.
The 2021 Wimbledon finalist will face either Taylor Fritz or Brandon Nakashima.
“It’s been a little bit of time to get the first win, but I am so happy. I love the conditions here, the place. It’s amazing. It’s called Tennis Paradise and it feels like that. I did not know Alejandro that well. I knew that he was a tricky player. He played three matches here so he was feeling confident. He believed that he could win and I felt it, so it was even tougher to beat him”, said Berrettini.
Jannik Sinner beat John Millman 6-2 6-2 to advance to the third round, where he will face either John Isner or Yoshihito Nishioka. Sinner broke times four times and did not face any break points. He won 86% of his first serve points. The Italian Next Gen player broke twice in the third and seventh game to take the first set 6-2. He converted his fourth break point in the third game to take a 3-1 lead and sealed the second set 6-2 with a double break in the seventh game at love. “Today I played very well. I did not miss many shots and I felt great on court. I had one week of practise here, so it was quite long to prepare, which is very good”, said Sinner.
