Grigor Dimitrov rallies from one set and two breaks down to upset Danil Medvedev at Indian Wells

Grigor Dimitrov came back from one set and two breaks down to upset 2021 US Open champion Danil Medvedev in the fourth round at Indian Wells. 

Medvedev broke Dimitrov at the start of the first set and saved a break point in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead. Dimitrov fended off two break points to hold serve in the ninth game as he was serving to stay in the match. Medvedev served out the first set in the 10th game. 

The second set started with four breaks in the first five games, as Medvedev raced out to a 4-1 lead. Dimitrov reeled off five consecutive games with three breaks to close out the second set 6-4.

Dimitrov went up a 5-1 lead with a double break. Medvedev pulled one break back in the seventh game, but Dimitrov served out on his first match point in the ninth game when Medvedev hit a forehand long. Medvedev was aiming to reach the quarter finals at Indian Wells for the first time. 

“He is such a tough player and a competitor. Over the past year, I have played him a few times and have not been able to find a way. Today I just felt something at 1-4 and I calmed myself down and started to take better decisions and started to control the pace of the game, which I really believed helped me. In the end it was just very solid and smart play”, said Dimitrov. 

Cameron Norrie overcame Tommy Paul 6-4 4-6 6-2 to reach the quarter final. 

Norrie went up a double break in the third and fifth games and saved three break points to hold serve at deuce for 5-1. Paul saved two break points in the seventh game before pulling one break back in the eighth game for 3-5. Norrie served out the first set at love in the 10th game. 

Paul broke serve in the second game of the second set and saved three break points to hold serve for 3-0. Norrie broke straight back in the fifth game and held serve to draw level to 3-3. Paul closed out the second set 6-4 in the 10th game. 

Norrie started the third set with a break in the first game. Paul broke straight back at love to draw level to 1-1. Norrie converted his 10th break point in the 10th game to take a 2-1 lead. Paul broke straight back to draw level to 2-2. Norrie won the final four games with two breaks in the fifth and seventh game to close out the third set 6-2.
