Gael Monfils beat Italian wild card Lorenzo Musetti 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 in 1 hour and 33 minutes to reach the second round at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna at the Wiener Stadthalle.
Musetti saved two break points in the second game of the opening set and a third chance at deuce in the eighth game. Monfils dropped just two points in his six service games. Both players held their service games en route to the tie-break. Monfils went up a 3-0 lead with two mini-breaks. Musetti pulled one break back for 1-3 but Monfils won three of the final four points to claim the tie-break 7-2.
Monfils converted his second break point in the third game and held his next service games to close out the second set 6-4.
Diego Schwartzman beat Fabio Fognini 6-3 7-5. Schwartzman opened up a 3-1 lead with a break in the first game. Fognini saved three break points to hold serve in the fifth game for 2-3. Schwartzman converted his third break point in the eighth game and held serve at deuce to close out the first set 6-3.
Schwartzman earned a break in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead.Fognini pulled back on serve in the 10th game to draw level to 5-5. Schwartzman earned his second break in the 11th game and served out the win the second set 7-5.
Lorenzo Sonego beat German qualifier Dominik Koepfer 6-4 6-3 in 1 hour and 19 minutes. Sonego wiil face Casper Ruud, who is chasing a qualifying spot for the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.
Both players went on serve in the first five games. Koepfer saved the only break point in the sixth game. Sonego served well in the first set and dropped just three points on his service games to take a 5-4 lead. Sonego closed out the first set 6-4 with a break in the 10th game after a backhand error from Koepfer.
Sonego opened up a 4-1 lead with a break in the fourth game. Koepfer won two service games at love but Sonego held on his serve to close out the second set 6-3.
