Alexander Zverev is looking forward to resting and improving his game after losing in the Indian Wells quarter-finals.

The Olympic champion crashed out of the BNP Paribas Open on Friday after a 4-6 6-3 7-6(3) defeat to Taylor Fritz.

After wasting five of his eight break point opportunities, Zverev was maid to rue his missed chances as he went out at the quarter-final stage at Indian Wells.

Despite Stefanos Tsitsipas’ exit, Zverev couldn’t capitalise and will now look ahead to the rest of the season where the German will look to finish strong at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.

In his post-match press conference Zverev admitted that his mental and technical game wasn’t good enough and he is looking forward to resting, “Today was just not really my day, to be honest,” the German admitted.

“I was close to winning, but the level of tennis was just not quite there for me. Today mentally is not easy for me. My next tournament is (in) Vienna. Hoping I can deal with it well there, but right now I just want to go home.

It was a very long season. I have played well. But this one hurts because I knew that after Stefanos lost this morning, I was kind of the favourite to win this tournament, but my tennis wasn’t there yet. Fritz played a great match. He deserves to be in the semi-finals.”

Heading into the match Zverev had won 20 of his last 21 matches on hard courts which included winning the Olympics and the Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati.

But this latest loss is a reminder for Zverev not to get complacent as the season draws to its conclusion.

The German’s next tournament will take place in Vienna, which starts on the 25th of October.

Tournaments in Paris and the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin will follow as he looks to finish a career-best season in style.
