The world number five cruised into the second round after beating the Canadian qualifier in straight sets.
Elina Svitolina is into the second round of the US Open after beating Rebecca Marino in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 in 63 minutes hitting 14 winners and serving two aces while the Vancouver native hit 21 unforced errors.
It was the Canadian who got off to a faster start earning three chances to break in the first game of the match but the Ukrainian managed to save all three and hold her opening service game.
It stayed on serve until 3-2 when the Odessa, Ukraine native earned a breakpoint and broke the world number 175 to take a 4-2 lead and managed to get a double break to take the first set.
Svitolina carried the momentum into the second set and once again got the early break to take a 2-0 lead but was broken right back the very next game and the next two games went with breaks of serve.
Finally, the world number five was able to consolidate the break, and at 4-1, the Canadian pushed hard to get back in the set and had four chances to get a break back but again was denied by the Ukrainian.
Svitolina served out the set and the match to set up a second-round encounter with the Spanish qualifier Rebeka Masarova who beat the Romanian Ana Bogden in three tight sets.
