Stefanos Tsitsipas has his sights set on the world number one spot ahead of competing in Cincinnati this week.

The Greek recently became the world number three overtaking Rafael Nadal in the world rankings.

As Nadal and Djokovic continue to manage injuries, Tsitsipas is looking to lead the charge to dethrone Djokovic at the top of the rankings.

Speaking on media day in Cincinnati Tsitsipas revealed he has his sights set on the top spot in men’s tennis, “No 3 is a number that is very significant and it holds a big importance,” Tsitsipas was quoted as saying by Eurosport.

“You don’t get many exciting moments like this in your career. I saw it come out, and I felt overwhelmed by it. It was a great feeling. It adds some value to yourself for the efforts that you have put in to get there.

“Now the second phase of that goal is to remain there. The rankings are there for a reason. They signify something important. I think that the very next step would be the No 1 spot, which I hope I can get to one day.”

Tsitsipas is currently around 3,800 points behind the Serb with the Greek looking to finish the season strongly.

Having won 45 matches, a tour-leading record this season, the Greek also revealed a strategy to try and chase his world number one dream, “I want to get to the stage of a tournament where I’m able to get a lot of points,” Tsitsipas added.

“I am aiming for the big points. I know that most of the big points are semi-finals onwards. That’s where you get the most amount of points, and I want to be aiming for that.”

After reaching the semi-finals in Toronto, Tsitsipas now continues his preparations for the US Open in Cincinnati where he is the second seed.

His first match will be against Laslo Djere or rising American start Sebastian Korda on Wednesday.
