Coco Vandeweghe has responded to criticism following a video that went viral of her showing a lack of effort during a mid-match warm-up.
The former US Open Women’s doubles champion was playing a first round match against Ekaterine Gorgodze in an ITF event in Landsville when the incident happened.
At one set all, play was suspended due to the heat and Gorgodze requested a warm-up before the start of the third set.
However Vandeweghe wasn’t happy with this happening which resulted in the American showing a lack of effort during the warm-up as seen below.
Eventually the world number 160 retired at 2-0 down in the deciding set and faced online criticism about the incident.
After the match Vandeweghe explained that she was suffering from heat exhaustion and nausea, requesting that Gorgodze should warm-up with her coach instead.
However that didn’t happen hence the lack of effort in the warm-up. Next for the American will be a WTA event in Chicago a week before the US Open.
