Coco Gauff revealed her experience of testing positive from COVID-19 after beating Victoria Azarenka in an exhibition match in Washington D.C.

The 17 year-old returned to the tennis court for the first time since Wimbledon with a 6-3 6-1 victory over Victoria Azarenka as part of the Women’s Invitational in Washington.

Gauff was due to compete at the Olympic Games however a positive COVID-19 test result before flying out to Tokyo saw her dreams up in smoke as she underwent a self-isolation period.

Speaking after her win over Azarenka Gauff explained that she had a small amount of symptoms, “I’m just happy that I didn’t have really many symptoms. I was pretty much asymptomatic,” Gauff was quoted by tennis365 as saying after the match.

“I just had – still have – a loss of smell. But other than that, I’m A-OK. The real problem is just getting the dosages spaced out and, obviously, going from country to country is difficult. But, I’m going to get it as soon as I can.”

Gauff hopes to get her first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine after the tournament in Cincinnati which starts on the 16th of August.

The American is still set to compete in Montreal next week after the exhibition in Washington. Gauff’s next match is scheduled for Saturday when she plays Jessica Pegula.
