British auction house Christie’s says a recent charity auction by Roger Federer has exceeded expectations with the total raised being more than three-times higher than the pre-sale low estimate.
The two-phrase auction has generated a staggering £3,429,125 which will be donated to the Roger Federer foundation to support its educational initiatives across Switzerland and Southern Africa. The money has been raised through a live auction which was conducted on June 23rd, as well as an online sale that took place between 23 June – July 14.
“We started collecting items which accompanied me on court because we thought that perhaps one day we could do something meaningful with them,” Federer said. “[We are] humbled to see that the decision we made will make a profound difference to so many children.”
Almost two thirds of the money raised was via the Online Auction. A total of 300 items was up for grabs which chronicles Federer’s career from the early 2000s until the present day. The items which generated the highest bid was Federer’s racket collection which he used during the 2019 Wimbledon Championships. It had an estimated value of £7000-£10,000 and ended up selling for £162,500. His 2009 French Open outfit also sold for £75,000 which is 10 times more than the lowest estimate. In total 25 items were sold for £20,000 or higher and £2,099,750 was raised through the online sale.
As for the Live Auction 20 items from his Grand Slam victories were up for grabs during an event which was live streamed online. The two highest sellers were Federer’s champion outfits and Rackets he had during the 2009 French Open, as well as the 2007 Wimbledon Championships. Each of them sold for £187,500 with the total rise for the entire auction coming in at £1,329,375.
“I am overwhelmed by the generosity and enthusiasm of the support from around the world,” Federer said in a statement to atptour.com.
According to their official website, The Roger Federer Foundation has spent $52M for its education initiatives conducted in 7500 primary schools and preschools. It is estimated that 1.75M children have benefitted from a better quality in their education since the Foundation started 17 years ago.
