Matteo Berrettini cruised past Federico Coria 6-3 6-3 6-2 after 1 hour and 58 minutes to advance to the third round at Roland Garros for the third time in his career.
Berrettini hit 46 winners and won 82 % of his first service points to extend record this year to 13 wins to 3 defeats since returning from a groin injury. He has claimed the fourth ATP Tour title of his career.
Berrettini is one of the seven players in the second round at this year’s edition of the French Open.
Berrettini earned an immediate break in the first game, but he missed a double break point in the third game. The Italian player went up a double break in the ninth game to close out the first set 6-3.
Berrettini missed a break point in a long second game of the second set at 1-1. He saved the first two break points at 15-40 in the third game. The 2019 US Open semifinalist converted his third break point at deuce at deuce and held serve at 15 in the next game to close the second set 6-3.
Berrettini earned two breaks in the first and fifth games to open up a 4-1 lead. Coria pulled one break back in the sixth game, but Berrettini converted his second break point in the seventh game to seal the third set 6-2.
Berrettini will face Soonwoo Kwon, who beat Andreas Seppi 6-4 7-5 7-5.
“I knew that I could beat him. I stepped onto the court knowing that I could hurt him tennis-wise. I was serving well, playing aggressive. Everything was working pretty fine. After struggling with injury last year, I wasn’t in the best place on my career last year. I had a lot of injuries last year. It wasn’t an easy year for anyone. So when I struggle, I struggle. When I am happy, I am happy, but before it was a little bit too dark. I have to work. I am proud of what I have done. Now I am really looking forward to playing the next tournaments, next matches, because at the end now I am back again”, said Berrettini.
Last year’s Roland Garros semifinalist Diego Schwarzman beat Aljaz Bedene 6-4 6-2 6-4 after 2 hours and 21 minutes. Phillip Kohlschreiber overcame this year’s Australian Open semifinalist Aslan Karatsev 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-1 in 3 hours and 2 minutes.
