The American began his tournament with an impressive straight sets win over his Serbian opponent.
John Isner is through to the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open after beating the Serb Miomir Kecmanovic 6-4, 7-6 in 1 hour and 20 minutes firing 47 winners and 28 aces in the win.
The first set was pretty routine with both players doing a good job holding their serve and at 5-4 it was the world number 39 who started to apply pressure on the Serb and earned three set points.
He would break to take the first set in 28 minutes and he was off to a great start in the Spanish captial.
The second set like the first was almost identical to the first with both players again holding serve but this time it was the world number 47 at 4-4 who put the American under pressure and the Dallas, Texas resident saved four breakpoints before being able to hold serve.
The second set and match would be decided by a tiebreaker with the American jumping out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a lucky net cord and a return winner from the world number 39.
The Serb managed to fight his way back into the breaker and managed to level it at 4-4 but the American would eventually win it 8-6 to take the set 7-6 and the match.
He will next face Roberto Bautista Agut or Marco Cecchinato in the next round having most recently played the Spaniard in Miami.
