John Isner kicked-off his French Open by beating good friend and fellow American Sam Querrey 7-6, 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 45 minutes on court.
The 31st seed, who is playing in only his second tournament since Miami, fired 22 aces and 39 winners past Querrey en route to the win. Furthermore, he also won 83% of his first service to record his 10th opening win at the tournament.
As expected with both of these players having big serves the first set went without a single breakpoint and would be decided by a tiebreaker. That was when world No.34 got out to a 3-0 lead and built on it to take the breaker 7-2 and therefore the first set 7-6.
World number 67 Querrey had a chance to break in the opening game of the second set but Isner did a good job saving it with a big ace. The set stayed on serve until 3-2 when the Isner found himself at triple breakpoint and managed to get the break to take the 4-2 lead. That break was enough for him to serve out the second set.
In other matches on day two of the Grand Slam, Steve Johnson battled back from the brink to oust Frances Tiafoe 6-7(5), 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1. Casper Ruud defeated Benoit Paire 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, 7-6(4), and Nikoloz Basilashvili dismissed Dusan Lajovic 6-4, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2.
