Denis Shapovalov had no issues playing and winning his second match on Thursday after beating Laslo Djere 6-4, 6-4 in 91 minutes.
The world No.15 had to play two matches within the same day in Geneva due to adverse weather conditions pushing the tournament schedule behind. Against Djere Shapovalov won 76% of his first service points and saved eight out of the nine break points he faced.
“I definitely think I played amazing today,” Shapovalov told atptour.com on Thursday. “Obviously a very tough day playing two matches, but super happy to get the win and super excited to be in the semi-finals.”
Fatigue didn’t seem to be an issue for the Toronto native as in the opening game of the match he would go to work right away earning two breaks and earning the early to break to take a 1-0 lead.
However, the Canadian would give the break back the very next game serving two double faults in a row and the match stayed on serve until the Serb managed to get a breakpoint at 3-2 but the world number 15 did a better job saving with his powerful one handed backhand.
The very next game the number two seed had a chance to break again but it was the Serb turn to deny him the opportunity before earning two more the very next game and the Canadian would save both with his booming serve.
At 4-4 the world number 15 had three looks at a breakpoint and it was third time lucky for the Canadian as he would earn the crucial break and serve out the set.
Shapovalov carried the momentum into the second set once again earning two chances to break in the opening game and breaking once again to take an early 1-0 lead.
That one break was all the Canadian needed to serve out the match and set up a semi final match with Pablo Cuevas of Argentina who upset Grigor Dimitrov.
