French lucky loser Arthur Rinderknecht came back from one set down to take an upset 6-7 (7-9) 6-2 7-5 win over 2019 Next Gen ATP Finals Jannik Sinner.
Rinderknecht earned the first break in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead. Sinner converted his third break-back point in the seventh game and held serve to draw level to 4-4. Sinner saved two set points to hold serve for 5-5 at deuce. Both players held their next two service games en route to the tie-break. Rinderknecht saved two set points at 5-6 and 6-7, but Sinner converted his third chance to win the tie-break 9-7.
Rinderkecht went up a double break in the third and fifth games to open up a 4-1 lead and held on his next service games to close out the second set 6-2.
The 25-year-old French earned an early break in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Sinner broke back in the sixth game to draw level to 3-3, but Rinderknecht broke for the second time to open up a 5-3 lead. Sinner broke back in the 10th game to draw level to 5-5. Rinderknecht got the decisive break in the 11th game and served it out at love.Rinderknecht reached the quarter final in Marseille last February. He lost in the qualifying round before beating Mikael Yimer in the opening round in Lyon. The Frenchman will face Cameron Norrie, who beat Dominic Thiem earlier today.
