Russia’s Daniil Medvedev has been removed from the Monte Carlo Masters and placed in isolation following a positive COVID-19 test.

The world No.2 returned a positive result following a routine test that was conducted at the tournament on Monday, according to a statement issued by the ATP. Details about Medvedev’s current health have not been published and it is unclear as to if he is experiencing any symptoms at present. He had been training at the Monte Carlo Country Club in recent days and participated in the media day on Sunday.

“It’s a big disappointment not to play Monte Carlo,” Medvedev said in a statement. “My focus is now on recovery and I look forward to getting back out on the Tour as soon and as safely as possible.”

Medvedev is currently being monitored by the Tournament physician and the ATP Medical Team. He was the second seed in the men’s draw but has now been replaced. It is unclear as to how long he will be required to spend in Isolation. Although the he has not entered to play a tournament next week in either Barcelona or Belgrade.

It is unclear as to if Medvedev’s positive test will have an impact on any other player on the Tour who might be classed as closed contacts. The former US Open finalist practiced with Rafael Nadal on the same day he discovered he had COVID-19. A video published by the ATP shows the two hitting, but at no stage did they come within close contact with each other. However, there is a photo of both men greeting each other with a fist bump on Instagram.

Medvedev is the highest ranked player on the men’s Tour to test positive for COVID-19 since Novak Djokovic. Djokovic contracted the virus during the same time as the Adria Tour which was forced to end early due to an outbreak.
