Last year’s US Open semifinalist Pablo Carreno Busta claimed his fifth career ATP Tour title and his first trophy on Spanish soil with a 6-1 2-6 6-4 win over Jaume Munar after 2 hours and 21 minutes in the final of the Any Tech 365 Andalucia Open in Marbella.
Munar saved three break points to hold serve at deuce to draw level to 1-1. Carreno Busta earned two breaks in the fourth and sixth games to win the first set 6-1. The second set went on serve in the first five games of the second set. Munar won the final four games with two consecutive breaks to close out the second set 6-2.
Carreno Busta went up a break in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead, but Munar broke straight back to draw level to 3-3.
Carreno Busta converted his seventh break point with a backhand return up the line from deep in the court to take a 6-5 lead clinching his first title since Chengdu in 2019.
Munar, who was bidding to win his first career title, has a record of 12 wins and 3 defeats on the ATP Tour and ATP Challenger combined.
“I suffered like yesterday trying to continue fighting all the time. I needed to do it if I wanted to win this kind of match. It’s a pleasure to win here in Spain, in Marbella. For me, it’s very special. It’s my fifth title, so I am very happy for the victory”, said Carreno Busta.
During the award ceremony Carreno received the trophy from former Bjorn Borg, whose son Leo played in the qualifying round in Marbella.
“It’s an honour to have Bjorn and also Manolo Santana here. It’s very special to us to play in front of these legends and it’s alwaus a pleasure to hear these words from them”, said Carreno Busta.
