Two Italian young friends Vittoria Oliveri and Carola Pessina have been nominated for the Laureus Sporting Moment of the Year. They are one of the six contenders for the most inspiring in sport.
The Laureus Sporting Moment Award started in 2016 to honour the most inspirational moment of the year.
Thirteen-year-old Vittoria and 11-year-old Carola rallied on roofs in Finale Ligure during the lockdown imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The video-clip went viral and captured the attentions audience around the world.
“During quarantine we decided to try to have a rally between a rooftop and another”, said Vittoria.
Last July Carola and Vittoria met their idol Roger Federer, who surprised them. They played roof tennis and enjoyed pasta for lunch. The video of Carola and Vittoria with Federer is called “A match-point against Covid.”
The nomination was awarded to reward the courage and passion that pushed Carola and Vittoria to overcome every obstacle with imagination. They managed to play tennis by rallying on roofs in spite of the pandemic tragedy.
Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, Naomi Osaka and Iga Swiatek are among the candidates for the Laureus Awards. Nadal has been nominated for the best sportsman of the year. Osaka is among the candidates for the best sports category.
