Cameron Norrie came back from one set down to beat five-time clay champion Christian Garin 3-6 7-5 6-3 after 2 hours and 28 minutes to claim his fifth top 30 win of the season at the Millenium Estoril Open.
Norrie earned a break of serve at 6-5 in the second set to win the second set 7-5. The British player earned a chance to close out the match at 5-2 in the third set and sealed the win at love in the 10th game. Norrie has reached his fourth quarter final of the season.
“Garin is always so tough on clay and I think it’s one of my best wins ever on clay. It was a battle. He came out a bit sharper than me. I managed to play a good return game in the second set to break there and held my nerve and played some of my best tennis of the week at the 3-2, 4-2 games”, said Norrie.
Norrie set up a semifinal clash against Marin Cilic, who was leading 7-6 (9-7) when his opponent Kevin Anderson was forced to withdraw from the match with a left abductor injury.
Cilic saved a set point before converting on his second chance with his first serve.
Albert Ramos Vinolas beat Corentin Moutet 6-4 6-3. Moutet fended off three match points at 5-3 before Ramos Vinolas converted his fourth opportunity with a forehand winner.
Ramos Vinolas set up a semifinal against his younger competriot Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who Ugo Humbert 6-4 6-4. Davidovich Fokina reached the quarter final in Monte-Carlo and is the youngest Spanish player in the top 50.
