Alexander Zverev safely got through to the quarter finals of BMW Open in Munich with a 6-2 6-4 win over Ricardas Berankis.
Zverev went up a double break to take a 3-0 lead. Berankis pulled one of the two breaks back on his second opportunity in the fourth game for 1-3. Zverev converted his second break point in the fifth games and held his final two break points to win the first set 6-2.
In the second set Berankis saved three break points to hold serve in a four-deuce first game. Zverev went up a set and a break in the third game to take a 2-1 lead with a forehand winner. Berankis broke back in the sixth game to win three consecutive games from 1-3 down to take a 4-3 lead. Zverev broke serve in the ninth game with a backhand winner and sealed the win on his second match point after 86 minutes. Zverev set up a quarter final match against either Ilya Ivashka or Mackenzie McDonald.
Zverev is bidding to win his third title in Munich. He has extended his record to 13-2 in his four previous appearances in Munich.
“I have not played much tennis the past weeks, so I know I will need to improve for the next match. I have overcome my right elbow injury. I have had success in the past and I feel good here. I have played here in the practice and hopefully I can do better on the match court”, said Zverev.
This year’s Monte-Carlo semifinalist Casper Ruud moved into the quarter final with his 6-3 6-2 win over Ilya Ivashka. Ruud went up a 3-0 lead with a break in the second game to take a 6-3 lead. The Norwegian player won the final five games with a double break to claim the second set 6-2.
Ruud will face John Millman, who was trailing 4-6 2-0 when Guido Pella withdrew from the match after 75 minutes.
