Rafael Nadal will continue his recovery from a back injury after withdrawing from the Miami Open.

The 20-time grand slam champion has had problems with his back since the start of the season having suffered the injury since quarantine in Australia.

Despite some painkillers taking the Spaniard through until the Australian Open quarter-finals, Nadal’s injury problems are still present after withdrawing from both Rotterdam and Acapulco.

Now Nadal has decided to continue his recovery from a back injury back in Spain and not travel to America for the Miami Open.

In a statement on Twitter Nadal was sad to announce his absence from the Masters 1000 event, “Sad to announce that I won’t be playing in Miami, a city that I love,” Nadal explained.

“I need to fully recover and get ready for the clay court season in Europe. Special message to my fans in the US and in particular to the great Spanish speaking community FL who always give me great support!”

Nadal will look to get back to his best for the clay court season and in particular to Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters which takes place on the 12th of April.

Having lost his world number two ranking to Daniil Medvedev last week, the 34 year-old will look for a strong clay-court swing as he bids for a record-breaking 21st grand slam at Roland Garros.

As for the rest of the ATP World Tour, they will look to take advantage of Nadal’s absence as the Miami Open starts on the 24th of March.
