Elisabetta Cocciaretto followed up her win over last year’s Roland Garros semifinalist Nadia Podoroska with a 6-3 6-0 win over Lauren Davis after 1 hour and 11 minutes to reach her first WTA Tour semifinal.
Cocciaretto set up a semifinal against 2014 Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard. Cocciaretto has been pushed to three sets in her first qualifying match, but she has not dropped a set since then in her five matches this week.
Cocciaretto converted five her six break points. Davis made 25 unforced errors, including 10 double faults.
Cocciaretto opened up a 2-0 lead with a break in the second game. Davis broke back in the third game at love to draw level to 2-2. Cocciaretto broke serve in the eighth game to close out the first set 6-3 and earned three consecutive breaks to take a bagel win in the second set. Cocciaretto has improved her best ranking to world number 112.
“I will have to raise my level. I don’t know Bouchard very well. The best player will win the match. The ranking is the result of the good matches I am playing. The most important thing is to improve my game. Davis and Podoroska are good players. I am happy that I played against them”, said Cocciaretto.
Number 2 seed Marie Bouzhkova scored her 10th main draw win of the 2021 season with a 6-4 6-2 win over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova improving her lead in their head-to-head matches to 2-0. Bouzhkova broke serve at love in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead and held on her next service games to claim the first set 6-4. Bouzhkova broke twice in the first and seventh games to win the second set 6-2. Bouzhkova faced one break point in the entire match. Bouzhova set up a semifinal against Sara Sorribes Tormo from Spain who cruised past Australian qualifier Astra Sharma 6-3 6-3 in 83 minutes. Sorribes Tormo went up a double break to take a 4-0 lead. Sharma pulled one break back in the eighth game for 3-5 but Sorribes Tormo converted her second break point at deuce to seal the first set 6-3. Sorribes Tormo claimed the second set with a break in the sixth game.
