Bianca Andreescu’s tennis career so far has been a major success but it has also had it down moments. 2019 was probably the best year of her career winning Indian Wells, Rogers Cup in front of a crazy packed house in her own backyard and finishing it off with a win at the US Open.
She took the time to reflect on her comeback from major injury and the pandemic in 2020 which was a year where she barely struck a ball.
“It’s always satisfying getting that three-setter especially after losing the first set to me. What I was super happy about that match was how even when I’m down I know I can find a way most of the time comeback and do really well and I keep proving that to myself. It’s really nice to get that under my belt, I felt super pumped the whole match considering everything that’s been happening I’m super happy.”
Andreescu is someone who is very emotional and at times is very prone to expressing those emotions in public but mostly diverting it at her players box and her coaching staff.
“In the heat of the moment I tend to show my emotions a bit more but that’s just me, I’m not trying to change that, I don’t want to control that because that’s just how I am”
The Canadian agreed with a reporter who asked her if her latest win was the best one since her comeback from injury.
“I agree, I felt super pumped in the match and after the match, I was constantly smiling. I’m just super happy because I feel like I’m really back, I’m a step closer to feeling as good as I was in 2019 and I want to keep rolling like that and feeling really good out there and clutching tough moments.”
She was also asked if she had any doubts about coming back and what she did to get through during 2020 when she was recovering from her injury.
” I was dealing with a lot the past couple months, even 2020, It wasn’t that good of a year for me in many ways and I was super down on myself. What really got me through that were my family and my friends and to me that was the most important thing having my family and my friends by my side. They really showed me the way how this sport is meant for me and how I have a bigger purpose in life and and Ill be able to achieve that by playing this sport. That just gives me motivation to continue and to have the same passion and love for the game and it’s showing. At the begining of the year not so much but now it’s showing and I’m trusting the process and it’s really turning out well for me”.
The Toronto native elaborated on the process and what it took to get her to where she is today.
” There are a couple of things but I believe that one of them is to inspire and to help others and through Tennis, I think I can do a lot of that”.
She capped it off by answering if she was back to way she was in 2019 solving matches, changing tactics to get good results.
” That’s kinda how It felt because I didn’t put pressure on myself and that’s what I did coming into 2021 because I haven’t played in so long and it like “oh I’m still top 10 so people are going to expect a lot from me but I feel this tournament I’m going with the flow and just having fun out there and it’s really showing and I want to continue like that because that’s when I play my best tennis”
