Bianca Andreescu is into the quarterfinals of the Miami Open after coming back from a set down to beat Garbine Muguruza 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 winning 69% of her first serve points and hitting 34 winners in the victory.
” It was really tough, she started out playing really well, I don’t think I was at the level I wanted to be at the start of the match because I knew she was going to come out really strong and that’s what she did but I had to readapt which I did in the second set, I regrouped and I kept fighting, I changed my game plan a little bit as well and it worked,” The former US Open champion said following her latest win.
The game stayed on serve for most of the first set with both players doing a good job at holding serve until 4-3 when Andreescu faced two breakpoints. On the second she was broken by the number 12 seed who took a 5-3 before serving out the first set.
The second frame also started on serve but this time at 2-1 it was the Canadian who earned breakpoints and would break with her impressive forehand to take a 3-1 lead. That break was enough for her to serve out the second set to take it 6-3 and send the match once again into a deciding third set.
The third set is where the Canadian hit her stride as she started to take control of the match after a slow start and broke the Spaniard in the first game of the set. Andreescu jumped out to a 4-1 lead before being able to serve out the match and the win to book her spot in the final eight. She will next take on Sara Sorribes Tormo.
” I have seen her play” she told the media of playing Tormo in her post-match press conference, ” I know she gets to a lot of balls, she has a very heavy spinny ball and she’s a crazy fighter so I want to go out there and fight even harder and hopefully I can do good things”
