Tomorrow’s 62 scheduled pre-Australian Open matches have been cancelled after a hotel quarantine worker tests positive for COVID-19.

At 10.30pm local time on Wednesday, is when Tennis Australia staff started to become nervous again as Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews gave them some unwanted news.

It was revealed by Andrews that a hotel quarantine worker, who worked at the Grand Hyatt during the Australian Open quarantine has tested positive COVID-19.

After testing negative on the 29th of January, the worker developed symptoms and his latest test result returned positive. As a result it was announced that the 500-600 players, staff, coaching teams and officials that stayed at the Grand Hyatt would have to self-isolate until returning a negative test result.

Later on Wednesday, Australian Open announced that as a result, play on Thursday has now been cancelled and Friday’s schedule will be revealed later on.

This comes as a massive blow with the Australian Open set to begin in five days time, proving that anything can still happen even with no COVID-19 transmission.

As it stands this is unlikely to affect the Australian Open schedule but the future looks unclear as it still remains uncertain if any of the other players will test positive themselves.
