Stefanos Tsitsipas became the second player ever to come back from two sets down to beat Rafael Nadal at a Grand Slam tournament after Fabio Fognini at the 2015 US Open.
Tsitsipas went down two sets, but he rallied to win the third set in the tie-break before coming back to take a thrilling 3-6 2-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 7-5.
“I have no words to describe what has just happened on the court. My tennis speaks for itself. It’s unbelievable feeling to fight at such a high level and leave it on the court. I started very nervously. I don’t know what happened after the third set. Staying calm on court and holding my nerves is a very important element and having failed to do so in some of my matches, I think I would give a big part of my win to that. I flew like a bird and everything worked for me”, said Tsitsipas.
The Greek player scored the second top 10 win of his career at Grand Slam level after beating Roger Federer in the 2019 Australian Open.
“It was everything I ever dreamed of, and I am glad that I am where I am today. I just played more flawless. I played with no care and that increased the level of tennis that I put there. There is obviously light ahead of the end of the tunnel, and there is plenty more to go”.
Tsitsipas admitted that he reached the zen like state of mind of playing peak tennis when he needed to come back from two sets down to beat Nadal. The 2019 ATP Finals champion raised his game by winning a tight third-set tie-break.
“The thing is that I wasn’t really thinking about a lot of things. Nothing was going through my head. I was so much, how would I describe myself ?, Nirvana. Just like, there. Playing, not thinking. I was thinking a little bit, but I was mainly focused on each single serve, each single shot. I think at the very third set I changed few things. I changed my patterns. I maybe took a little bit more”.
Tsitsipas set up a semifinal clash against Danil Medvedev, leads 5-1 in their career head-to-head matches. Tsitsipas scored his only win over Medvedev in the round robin match at the 2019 ATP Finals in London.
“I can see that maybe as I got the opportunity to play longer, feel the court, understand the environment that I am in. I don’t feel completely exhausted. I think with experience I have realised how to preserve my energy and when I really have to put in the hard work in the match”, said Tsitsipas.
Medvedev aims to extend his winning streak
Medvedev is bidding to become the third Russian male player to win a Grand Slam tournament after Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin. The 2020 ATP Finals champion beat his compatriot Andrey Rublev 7-5 6-3 6-2.
“Medvedev plays very well and has been very consistent, with lots of consecutive wins. I need to recover and have a good ice bath. I am looking forward to the match annd each match I play here is an opportunity to play my best tennis. It will be amazing to see the crowd again”, said Tsitsipas.
Tsitsipas is aiming to reach his first Grand Slam final after playing two semifinals at the 2019 Australian Open and 2020 Roland Garros. The Athens-native player will face a very tough semifinal against Medvedev, who has won his past 19 matches since November 2020 and has a 11-match winning streak against top 10 players.
“I am really happy that I managed to keep this momentum going so far, and it feels great. Hopefully I continue for at least two more matches. The best feeling is when you matches, so the more you win in a row, the more it’s a feeling. Against Rublev we had unbelievable rallies. I think the match was high quality. It’s the first time that I saw Andrey tired. We always laugh about him, that he is like a battery, like Duracell. I actually managed to get him tired”, said Medvedev.
