The Spaniard is through to the third round after a comfortable win over the American qualifier.
Rafa Nadal had no issues getting through American qualifier Michael Mmoh beating him in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, and 6-2. He put on quite the clinic hitting 40 winners and winning 94% of his net points.
A great start for Rafa
Both players held serve the first three games of the match and at 2-1 the world number two had the first break opportunities and broke the American serve with a stunning forehand winner to take an early 3-1 lead.
At 4-1 he kept applying the pressure and had more chances to brake and did so forcing the error from the qualifier to take a 5-1 lead and served for the set to take it 6-1 in 30 minutes.
A tigher second set
The Spaniard took the momentum into the second set and at 2-2 had two more chances to get the first break of the set and broke once again as Mmoh sent a ball wide for the 3-2 lead..
The rest of the second set went with serve and the Mallorca, Manacor native served out the second set to take it 6-4 with one of his seven aces in the match.
The Spaniard closes it out
Nadal was in mood to play games and wanted to finish the match as soon as possible not to give any hope or life to his opponent and once put great pressure on the American serve.
Mmoh ended up saving three breakpoints before eventually holding serve in the first game of the third set. He faced even more pressure from the number two seed but managed to keep holding serve.
At 2-2 Mmoh serve finally cracked and an untimely double fault give Nadal two more chances to break and he finally did with a great volley winner. The very next game he had another chance to break and potentially serve for the match thanks to an amazing passing shot.
The Spaniard would eventually break one more time with a phenominal forehand winner to take a 5-2 lead and served for the match to take it in straight sets.
After the match Nadal was pleased with the win and gave his thoughts in a on court interview.
“I think tonight had been a positive evening for me winning in straight sets, great news for everything and for me just try to focus on whats next and what’s going to be more difficult”
A funny moment during the match a lady was escorted by security out of the stadium for giving Nadal the finger during a stoppage in play, Nadal will next play Cameron Norrie of Great Britain in the third round.
