Novak Djokovic has confirmed that details concerning his physical problems experienced at this year’s Australian Open will come to light later this year in a special documentary.
The world No.1 has struggled with an issue in his abdominal area during the Melbourne Major and previously admitted that he considered retiring during his third round match against Taylor Fritz. Initially Djokovic feared it was a muscle tear that he suffered, but this has since been dismissed. However, it is unclear as to what the exact problem is for the 17-time Grand Slam champion who recently declined to disclose the results of his MRI scan to the media.
Despite the problem, Djokovic is through to his ninth Australian Open final after seeing off Russian qualifier Aslan Karatsev in straight sets. Following his latest victory, the Serbian proclaimed that it was ‘the best he felt in the entire tournament’ following some intensive rehabilitation.
“Recovery is 100 percent of my day for the last five days,” Djokovic told reporters in Serbian following his match. “Actually, I am making a documentary, so everyone will be able to see it. It should be up by the end of this year. We are recording a lot of stuff I have been going through in the last few months, so you will be able to see all of that.”
It has been reported that the documentary is scheduled for release at the end of this year. Besides Djokovic’s injury setback, it will also explore his disqualification from last year’s US Open after accidentally hitting a lines judge with a ball, as well as the controversial Adria Tour. An exhibition series he co-founded which ended following an outbreak of COVID-19.
Reflecting on his latest performance at Melbourne Park, Djokovic said he wasn’t entirely shocked by how well he was moving around the court with relatively little pain. Saying he has previously experienced similar issues.
“I am surprised the way I felt. I think it surpassed, in a way, my greatest wishes and the way I wanted to feel,” he said.
“But at the same time I did have a kind of similar experiences in the past where I was managing to recover pretty quickly.’
“Each one of us players is different. I just have, of course with the help of all the people around me, this pretty good way and ability to recover fast.”
Djokovic has confirmed that he will provide more details about his Australian Open injury after the final. In the title match he will play either Daniil Medvedev or Stefanos Tsitsipas.
