Novak Djokovic has got off to a dream start at the Australian Open after crushing a jaded-looking Jeremy Chardy in straight sets.
The 17-time Grand Slam winner never encountered any difficulty through his 6-3, 6-1, 6-2, win over the world No.66. Throughout the clash Djokovic hit 24 winners to seven unforced errors and converted six out of 13 break point chances. Furthermore, he also produced a strong service performance by winning 86% of his first service points.
“It feels great. It makes my heart full to see crowds in the stadium again,” Djokovic said during his on-court interview.
“This is the most people I have seen on a tennis court in the last 12 months. I really appreciate their support in coming out tonight because sometimes you take these things for granted.”
In one respect Chardy were possibly the best first round opponent for the 33-year-old given their history. Heading into their latest clash, the top seed boasted an emphatic 13-0 head-to-head lead and was yet to lose a set against the French veteran who has been ranked as high as 25th in the world. On the Rod Laver Arena the world No.1 continued this trend on Monday.
“There is an ongoing love affair with this court between me and Rod Laver Arena,” said Djokovic. “It’s definitely my most successful and favourite court. Over the year I have been very lucky to have these successes and great memories. “
In what was a nightmare start from Chardy a poor service game enabled Djokovic to break instantly to place him in control of proceedings. The top seed continued to wear down his opponent on the court and even had a chance to extend his lead to 4-1 before failing to convert a break point opportunity. Nevertheless, Djokovic secured his second break at the end of the first set after a Chardy forehand landed beyond the baseline to hand him the 6-3 lead.
It was a case of deja vu in the second set with the match favourite once again dismantling the lacklustre Chardy serve to open up the early lead. Powering ahead Djokovic then secured a double break for a set and 4-0 lead with the help of a sublime forehand cross-court winner. Although the most impressive thing about the performance of the eight-time champion during the middle frame was the fact he only lost one point behind his own serve.
Strolling towards the finish line Chardy continued to fight but whatever he did it wasn’t enough to derail Djokovic from the straightforward victory. Two further breaks in Djokovic’s favour during the third set moved him to a game away from victory. Serving for the win, he closed out the match with back-to-back aces.
Besides his performance, there was also a slight awkward moment between the tennis star and the on-court presenter afterwards who questioned him about being ‘frustrated’ during the 14-day quarantine. Djokovic asked for classification on the question before going on to say ‘I am glad that we are free and playing tennis. I am glad I am back in Australia.’
Djokovic will play Frances Tiafoe in the second round on Wednesday. The American defeated Stefano Travaglia 7-6(5), 6-2, 6-2, in his opening match.
“It’s going to be the first time I play against him so I look forward to it,” he previewed.
“He is definitely one of the young up and coming American tennis players and has a bright future.’
“I look forward to the next challenge and lets keep it going.”
The latest victory is Djokovic’s 76th main draw win at the Australian Open. Making the tournament his most successful in terms of victories out of all the major tournaments.
