Victoria Azarenka won the the 2020 WTA Comeback of the Year Award despite the difficult 2020 season affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
Azarenka’s career was hampered by a series of injury problems and custody battle for her son Leo, but she fought back successfully in 2020 by winning her first WTA title in over four years at the Western and Southern Open in New York.
The Belarusian player went to reach the US Open final by beating 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams. Naomi Osaka came back from one set down to beat Azarenka in the final winning her third Grand Slam title. Azarenka qualified for her first Grand Slam final since her appearance at the 2013 US Open final.
Azarenka reached the quarter finals at the Rome Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome and lost to Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets in the final of the Ostrava Open, the final tournament of the year.
The Belarusian star finished the season in 13th position of the WTA Ranking.
“I can’t say that it was a big surprise for me to come back to this level because I have great confidence in my abilities and I know what I can do what I can do in good physical conditions. It is obvious that the last few years have been difficult. I could not assume that these good results would arrive and I could not expect anything particularly brilliant from me, but I have maintained the level necessary to be an important tennis player and to achieve great success”, said Azarenka to CGTN Sports.
Next February Azarenka will aim to win her third Australian Open title and her first trophy at Melbourne Park since 2013, when she beat Li Na in the final.
