Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Antalya Open to delay his season start and will focus on his preparation for the Australian Open. The world number 37 player will fly directly to Australia for the mandatory quarantine. He will train with 13-time Roland Garros champion Rafael Nadal in Melbourne.
The list of players, who have withdrawn from Antalya, includes Borna Coric, Marco Cecchinato, Lloyd Harris, Ilya Ivashka, Benoit Paire, Marco Trungelliti and Taro Daniel.
The updated line-up of the Turkish tournament features 2019 US Open semifinalist Matteo Berrettini, last year’s Monte-Carlo champion Fabio Fognini, 2017 ATP Finals runner-up David Goffin, 2019 Next Gen ATP Finals runner-up Alex De Minaur and Jan Lennard Struff.
Sinner finished the 2020 season as the youngest player and the only teenager in the top 100 of the ATP Ranking at world number 37.
Sinner finished the 2019 season on a high note with the Next Gen ATP title in Milan and ended last year in the top 100.
Sinner scored the first Grand Slam main draw win of his career at the Australian Open before losing to Marton Fucsovics in the second round. The Italian teenager beat David Goffin to advance to his first ATP 500 quarter final in Rotterdam, but he lost to Pablo Carreno Busta after holding two match points.
At the US Open he squandered a two-set lead and lost the first five-set match of his career against Karen Khachanov.
The San Candido native earned the biggest win of his career when he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the third round at Rome Masters 1000 and reached his first Grand Slam quarter final in Roland Garros debut as a 19-year-old player. He scored his second top 10 win this year when he beat Alexander Zverev at the French Open becoming the youngest quarter finalist at a Grand Slam tournament since 18-year-old Bernard Tomic at 2011 Wimbledon. Sinner was the first debutant to reach Roland Garros quarter final since Rafael Nadal in 2005. He was one of the five Italians to advance to Roland Garros third round.
Sinner played at the same level with Nadal in the French Open quarter final before losing in three sets. Sinner won 15 of the final 19 matches in 2020 and claimed his first ATP title at the Sofia Open breaking into the top 40 for the first time in his career.
