Jannik Sinner received the “Performance of the Year Award” from the Italian Sports Newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. The world number 37 player won the first ATP title of his career in Sofia last November and reached his first quarter final at Grand Slam level at Roland Garros.
During the virtual Award Ceremony Sinner talked about the 2021 season.
“I hope to get off to a good start to the 2021 season at the Australian Open and play and play as many match as possible next year. I will have many ups and downs, but I hope to play many good matches, like the quarter final against Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros. I would like to play well against Roger Federer”, said Sinner.
World number 33 Lorenzo Sonego won the Achievement of the Year Award for his 6-2 6-1 win over world number 1 Novak Djokovic at the ATP 500 in Vienna.
“I did not expect to beat Djokovic. I tried to remain focused but I saw that everything I did worked very well. I felt so emotional after the match, that I don’t remember what journalists asked me during the post-match interview. I will try to improve my English. It could be useful for future wins”.
Sonego was born in Turin, the host city of the ATP Finals from 2021 to 2025. The 25-year-old Italian player is currently training with Felix Auger Aliassime in Mallorca at the Rafael Nadal Academy. “As soon as I heard the news that Turin would host the ATP Finals, I started to work to pursue the dream to qualify fot this big event. I hope to fulfil this goal”, said Sonego.
