Jannik Sinner made a major breakthrough in 2020 winning the first title in his career at the ATP 250 tournament in Sofia. The Italian 19-year-old player became the youngest player to win an ATP Tour title in 12 years.
Sinner beat former top 10 David Goffin to reach his first ATP 500 quarter final in Rotterdam, but he lost to Pablo Carreno Busta after holding two match points.
At the Rome Masters 1000 tournament Sinner scored the biggest win of his career against Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the third round as a wild card.
Sinner beat Alexander Zverev en route to his first Grand Slam quarter final at Roland Garros in his debut at this tournament. In the quarter final Jannik played at the same level against Rafa Nadal in the first two sets, but the Spanish legend claimed the win in the third set. Sinner became the first debutant to reach the Roland Garros quarter final. Ljubicic thinks that Sinner played his best match against Nadal despite the defeat.
Nadal had to work harder than in his previous four matches. Sinner gave his best in the first two sets playing at the same level with Nadal.
According to Roger Federer’s coach Ivan Ljubicic, there is still more still to come from Sinner in the next years.
“Jannik Sinner is pure talent, in the mental, technical, and physical terms. These three things together are useful if you want to be Alberto Tomba in tennis. In my opinion, he is taking step by step, winning one small title in Sofia so far and knowing how hard he has to work to reach the top. For me Jannik’s best result came at Roland Garros, when he challenged Nadal for two sets”, said Ljubicic.
