Frustration has erupted among tennis fans on Wednesday after it was confirmed that one of the sports leading mobile app’s will be discontinued in 2021.
The ATP/WTA Live Scores App was launched a few years ago and is available in 19 different languages on the Apple store. Produced by EDH Tennis Limited, it has served as the official live scoring app for both the ATP and WTA, as well as showing order of play for various tournaments.
Despite its popularity, it has been decided to scrap the app due to what has been described as ‘changes to the data feed’ which has made the running of it no longer feasible. Meaning that in the new year there will be no combined application for tennis fans to follow which is run by the governing bodies. Instead, there will be two separate systems for the ATP and WTA.
“The ATP and WTA have announced the discontinuation of the ATP/WTA Live Scores App across all mobile and desktop platforms. As a result of changes made to the data feed, the app is no longer able to support the technical requirements of both the ATP and WTA,” a statement reads.
“From today, mobile users will be redirected to the official ATP App, the home of ATP Live Scores which offers an enhanced user experience, and to a dedicated WTA Live Scoring page on http://wtatennis.com.’
“The ATP and WTA remain committed to exploring opportunities for alignment across digital products.”
The move has prompted backlash across social media. Some users have accused the ATP and WTA of double standards following a year where there has been a lot of talk about the two working closer together to address the future of the sport. It is unclear as to when this decision was made or if the ATP and WTA plans to launch an app together in the future.
There are alternatives for tennis fans following the recent development. One of the most highly regarded app’s is Resultina which is available on both Apple and Android phones. It is a subscription-based app which currently costs £11:99 for 12 months. Free versions include FlashScore, various betting apps and those officially run by the tournaments.
