Bianca Andreescu had a major breakthrough at Indian Wells where she claimed her first WTA Premier Mandatory after defeating four top 20 players in the last four rounds. She scored three-set wins against Elina Svitolina in the semifinal and Angelique Kerber in the final.
made Canadian tennis history in 2019 by winning the US Open title. The Canadian player advanced to the final without facing a top-ten opponent. She achieved her biggest wins against Caroline Wozniacki in the third round and Belinda Bencic in the semifinal. Andreescu beat Serena Williams in the final to win her first Grand Slam title.
She became the first teenage Grand Slam singles champion since Maria Sharapova won the 2006 US Open title.
A left knee injury forced her to withdraw from the WTA Finals in Shenzhen. Andreescu missed the Australian Open and was unable to defend the Indian Wells title before the next five months were cancelled by the covid-19 pandemic.
Andreescu is now based in Monte-Carlo and is planning to make her come-back at the 2021 Australian Open in the early months of the 2021 season.
Her coach Sylvain Bruneau talked about Andreescu’s preparation for the 2021 season during an intervie to Match Point Canada.
“It was a very hard year. We trained in Monte-Carlo to fully recover from her knee injury. She was ready to make her return at Indian Wells, but all the tournaments were cancelled by the pandemic. During the summer we trained to prepare for the come-back, but she was sidelined by a foot injury and we had to stop training. I am optimistic that injuries are now part of the past. Her breakthough was so fast, that she was not ready to play many high level matches in a short period of time. We are working on her first serve. It could be an important weapon in her game. I would like to see her play more frequently at the net. We watch matches to learn something new, that could be added to her game. Her tennis can be different from the game played by other players. We are inpired by male players”, said Sylvain Bruneau.
Andreescu lacks match practice as she has not played on the WTA Tour for more than one year.
“Bianca gives her best in hard-fought matches and has to find the competitive feeling. She is going to be totally happy and excited to go back on the court and compete and is extremely motivated. The other side is that you get used to pressure by being put into it a little bit. When you are not facing that music for a little while, there is going to be a little bit of an adaptation, but Bianca, just by her nature, has always been someone who has thrived on competition”, said Bruneau.
