Two-time Olympic champion and three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray edged British number one Dan Evans 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 in his first match since October in the Battle of Brits in Rohempton.
Murray had not played a match since his defeat against Fernando Verdasco in Cologne last October. Murray won his last match on the ATP Tour against Yoshihito Nishioka in five sets in the first round of the US Open.
Murray fended off six break points in the first set before beating Evans 7-5 in the tie-break. The 33-year-old Dunblane star earned the only break in the first game of the second set and sealed the win on his fourth match point. The third edition of the Battle of the Brits league began on Sunday and ends on Wednesday. The tournament is organised by the Lawn Tennis Association to help British players prepare for the 2021 season. No ball boys or girls are being used, but there are umpires and officials.
