Greet Minnen upset number 3 seed Dayana Yastremska 6-4 6-3 in 77 minutes to reach the second round at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz.
The 24-year-old Belgian player made a breakthrough this year, when she qualified for second round at the Australian Open on her debut in a Grand Slam main draw.
Minnen went up a double break, but Yastremska fought back by pulling both breaks back to draw level to 3-3. Minnen earned another break in the seventh game before serving out the first set at love in the tenth game.
Minner went up an early break in the first game of the second set to open up a 3-1 lead. Yastremska broke back in the sixth game to draw level to 3-3, but Minnen converted her second break point to take a 4-3 lead. The Belgian player broke for the third time on her first match point in the ninth game, as Yastremska was serving to stay in the match.
In the second round Minnen will face either Harmony Tan or Barbora Krejcikova, who advanced to the fourth round at this year’s Roland Garros.
“I knew from the start that she would be a player, who likes to dictate the game. She plays very aggressive. In the first few games, she did not have a very good start, but then she served better and that helped her come back in the first set. I tried to keep playing aggressively myself. I think I did that pretty well”, said Minnen.
