Novak Djokovic cruised to a 70th win at Roland Garros with a 6-1 6-2 6-2 demolition of Ricardas Berankis.

The Serb was in no mood for letting his standards slip as he took apart the Lithuanian from the very beginning.

Accurate serving, deep returns and well-constructed points helped Djokovic take control of his Lithuanian opponent, who didn’t have the variety to match the world number one.

After taking the first set 6-1, Djokovic was under pressure at the start of the second set as Berankis used his power from the baseline to take advantage of a drop in consistency from Djokovic.

Winning 92% of his first service points in the second set, Djokovic continued to dictate play, using some ridiculous angles to open the space in the court.

There was no stopping Djokovic even if his return positioning wasn’t as aggressive as previous tournaments on the clay of Paris.

A 6-1 6-2 6-2 victory for the World number one means he is now joint second on the all time list of Roland Garros wins alongside Roger Federer.

An opportunity to win match number 71 on Saturday as he takes on either Daniel Elahi Galan or Tennys Sandgren as he looks to claim an 18th grand slam title and a second on the Parisian clay.

Meanwhile Denis Shapovalov crashed out of Roland Garros in an extraordinary five set loss to Roberto Carballes Baena.

The Spaniard secured his first top 10 win of his career despite the 9th seed serving for the match twice in the final set.

A 7-5 6-7(3) 6-3 3-6 8-6 for the Spaniard means he will face Grigor Dimitrov in the third round.

In other results there were four set wins for Karen Khachanov and Cristian Garin, who will now face each other in the third round.

While Pablo Carreno Busta demolished Guido Pella 6-3 6-2 6-1.
