This year’s US Open finalist Alexander Zverev knocked out 2018 Roland Garros semifinalist Marco Cecchinato 6-1 7-5 6-3 on Court Suzanne Lenglen to set up a fourth round clash against Jannik Sinner.
Zverev broke serve six times and won 85 percent of his first serve points. The German star reached the fourth round at Roland Garros for the third consecutive year.
Zverev broke three times to win the opening set 6-1. Cecchinato broke serve in the seventh time and held his serve at deuce to take a 5-3 lead to earn his chance to serve for the second set, but Zverev broke straight back in the 10th game to draw level to 5-5. The 2018 ATP Finals champion won his fourth consecutive game with his second break to clinch the second set 7-5.
Zverev broke serve in the second game of the third set to open up a 3-0 lead. Cecchinato saved two match points at 2-5. The Italian player earned a break point, but Zverev saved it before serving out the win at deuce on his third match point.
“I am definitely much happier with my game than against Herbert. I worked on a few things yesterday. I was very unsatisfied with myself two days ago, but I still won. That was important. I know that with every round I have to play better and better, otherwise I will not have a chance”, said Zverev.
