Sixth seed Matteo Berrettini hit 40 winners in his 6-4 6-4 6-2 win over Casper Ruudin two hours and two minutes to set up a fourth round match against Andrey Rublev at the US Open in New York. Berrettini has not dropped a set this tournament.
Berrettini earned two break points in the third game of the first set and converted his first chance. The Italian player did not drop any points on serve and fired seven aces to claim the opening set 6-4.
Both players did not face any break points in the second set. In the ninth game Berrettini earned a break point and broke with his forehand winner.
Berrettini faced the first break points at the start of the third set. He saved the first chance with his serve. Ruud made a forehand error on the second chance.
Berrettini earned a break point in the next game with his forehand. Ruud earned two break back points in the fourth game. Ruud earned two break back points in the fourth game, but Berrettini saved them. The 2019 US Open semifinalst earned another break to race out to a 4-1 lead.
Berrettini set up a fourth round match against Andrey Rublev, who cruised past Salvatore Caruso 6-0 6-4 6-0 with eight breaks to reach the fourth round at the US Open for the third time in his career. Three years ago Rublev became the youngest US Open quarter finalist since Andy Roddick in 2001.
“I think maybe I was more under pressure last year. Berrettini reached the semifinal in 2019, so I have no pressure. He has all the pressure”, said Rublev.
