Maria Sakkari produced a dominant 6-3 6-1 victory over Amanda Anisimova to reach the last 16 of the US Open.
The world number 22 controlled the match from the start as her defensive skills outpowered’ Anisimova’ aggression.
27 unforced errors for Anisimova proved costly as Sakkari matched her performance from the Australian Open in January.
Next for Sakkari is Serena Williams or Sloane Stephens.
In their first meeting, it was Sakkari who made the faster start and overall controlled the rallies better.
The Greek’s good form pre-lockdown has carried on in Tennis’ restart and she showed why with her ability to create unique angles followed by her defensive game.
Although Anisimova tried to outpower Sakkari in the early stages, it was the 15th seed who controlled the tempo of the rallies and had an answer for everything the American threw at her.
Rushing the American on her service game, Sakkari got her first break of the match in the fifth game after the 19 year-old double-faulted.
Some deep returns and powerful forehands caused Anisimova problems as the 22nd seed didn’t have the variety in her game to respond.
Another break in the ninth game secured the first set in 28 minutes, 6-3. The second set saw Anisimova get off to a better start as a few punishing forehands gave her the early break.
However it wasn’t enough as Sakkari continued to dictate the points and extend the rallies.
Her speed, agility, shot selection and variety of pace caused Anisimova all sorts of problems as the American hit 27 unforced errors in the match.
Six games in a row secured her place into the last 16, equalling her performance at the Australian Open earlier this year.
A solid and controlled performance from Sakkari saw her hit 3 more winners than unforced errors as Anisimova produced too many errors in crucial moments.
Next for Sakkari will be Serena Williams or Sloane Stephens in the fourth round on Monday.
