Marco Cecchinato beat Ernests Gulbis 6-3 7-5 after 1 hour and 43 minutes in the second qualifying round at Roland Garros in a clash between French Open semifinalist.
Two years ago Cecchinato produced a major upset when he beat Novak Djokovic in the French Open quarter final to reach his first Grand Slam semifinal.
The Italian player will face Frenchman Constant Lestienne, who cruised past Andrew Harris 6-1 6-1.
Former Next Gen ATP Finals champion Hyeon Chung came back from 1-4 down in the tie-break of the first set to beat wild-card Baptiste Crepatte 7-6 (9-7) 6-4 setting up a match against Renzo Olivo for a spot in the final qualifying round. Olivo beat Federico gaio 6-4 6-4.
Japan’s Taro Daniel beat Matthias Bourgue 6-4 6-4 setting up a match against Andrey Kuznetsov, who came back from losing the first set to beat Blaz Kavcic 4-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-3.
Leonardo Mayer cruised past Peter Polansky 7-5 6-0 to secure his spot in the next round, where he will face Spain’s Carlos Taberner, who beat Stefano Napolitano 6-4 7-5. Taberner lifted his maiden ATP Challenger title last week in Romania.
